when i was younger i thought venice was literally built in the sea, as in built atop piles like a great series of wharves and the water was deep

and i would think how difficult it must be to build like that

only later did i come to realise it was just built on low ground near a harbour and the canals were just that - trenches dug to the sea level so they would flood with water
