Me neither. I've honestly been considering perusing a certificate in communication, just to compensate.

Speaking of this, Roku boxes are pretty good.

They're just small boxes that run a locked down Linux distro that has a bunch of apps available for it like Netflix/Sling.

It comes with an app built in though which, depending on your area, gets a ton of free channels including local news channels.

So if you're looking to save money.

1) Only have internet service, use your own modem so no monthly fee

2) If you want TV service, get roku boxes and either use the free channels, and/or pay for a subscription TV service like Philo ($20 a month) or Sling ($30+ a month). At least Sling is equivalent (better actually) to regular cable service with all the "real" channels.

3) If you only use calling/texting on your phone, get Ting, $7 a month to keep phone number active when using nothing per month, $13 a month for light calls/texts (gets $3 and $5 more expensive if you use more than 100/100 minutes/texts than goes to 1000/1000 tier for the month), internet service is always available but gets expensive quick the more data you use, just keep mobile data off on your phone

Don't most sbc support casting and proprietary services, too, though? If I can stream Netflix on my Pinebook, I fail to see how that couldn't be accomplished on a RasPi – especially with all the documentation catering to norms. I think you can even cast to them, somehow, which would defeat the purpose of dedicated media clients like Roku.

You mean public access? You'd get more channels just getting the appropriate adapter.

Good advice. Legit effed up how telcos will do that. I was on my nephews computer, and I went onto a http site, and Cox literally injected a popup informing them of their data cap. I installed https everywhere immediately, but it's genuinely fucked up how they can see their users going to clearnet sites and, rather than redirecting them to their encrypted counterparts, capitalize on that. Genuinely shameless. I'm surprised Chromium still doesn't push https whenever feasible.

Because they don't have a remote that actually works with everything on it, and you'd have to do everything in a web browser with a wireless keyboard/mouse basically.

Roku box comes with a remote and interface designed to work with it, and has actual apps for most major TV streaming services and Netflix, among many other things.

You can't run these apps on standard Linux distros simply because they're not available.

Roku is the most popular one basically and every streaming service is basically forced to make an app for RokuOS. Privacy isn't a big concern because the only thing you do on it is watch TV/Netflix anyway who cares.

The remote would be your tablet or phone. You just press the cast button and YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc. shows up on your screen. My grandma doesn't have an issue with it, and she's a complete retard.

Yeah using the phone apps to stream with Chromecast or something just isn't comfortable.
