depends on the vest and the shot. you can watch people (very dangerously and stupidly) shoot each other in the vest and they just walk it off.

other calibers might still impart enough force to wind, break ribs, or just plain zip right through.

you can get soft body armor that does this, but a vest with a plate insert does a really good job of protecting from handgun cartridges. i doubt you'd be incapacitated from something like that.
