Compromising is a very very easy thing to do for people who feel unlovable if someone shows them even a little bit of affection. I made that mistake, and that's 2 years and ~$15000 I'll never get back. Because I hated myself and didn't think any better girls would love me.
I'm working hard to become someone I'm proud of, and someday I'll find a cute girl who loves me a lot and doesn't make me feel like a big bag of smelly garbage.
I hope that all /what/friens can learn to love themselves someday…

A big part that helps is doing things you can be proud of. Hobbies, skills, things you're an expert on, places you've been, etc. Things that you enjoy and can do without needing a girl with you. Finding something you're good at/getting good at something makes it a lot easier to think higher of yourself. It makes you feel more valuable and useful.
My things are drawing, music, and language. I still kinda suck at most of it, but I'm working hard to improve every day…
