I bet that was a little puzzling as an op, but there is a reason for that, and that's because I find it hard to put it in words as well, but I will try to convey the meaning. Art often focuses on some trait, phenomenom, some sort of quality of an existing or nonexisting thing and I feel like if I see this quality well pronounced I may get to know something about it and about myself as well as how I feel about that quality
I posted the op picture because it is nice and there is some artistic quality to it, so I will use it as an example to try to make my view more understandable.
As you can see the op picture, it clearly uses the difference of opposites to emphasize something, in our case, poor Hamakaze. Hamakaze has a rather simple design, a sailor 服, simple short-medium hair and a simple clip. The color scheme is fairly simple as well, blue, silver, white being the main elements. The background is contrasting this, pink, wild colors, and it's fairly random, contrasting and emphasizing our Hamakaze well.
But, the problem is, I don't really know why I like Hamakaze so much. I usually like characters with more contrasting colors such as black hair - white skin and not blue eyes.
So here is what we can contrast our Hamakaze to get to know our tastes - Kyrie Mashlight from FGO. She's basically hamakaze with some color mods. Same hair, even the same personality, yet, I didn't like her, even as straight up ignoring her some sort of existential musings in the show, so there is clearly something with the hair color. It seems like the hair color of hamakaze takes such an important part of emphasizing that something I like in her that if we take it away, she loses this quality. From silver, I take some sort of timelessness, nobility, purity, yet if I had to emphasize these qualities, I wouldn't really choose her design and I don't feel like I like her for these either.
The interesting relation here is that it feels like silver is working outside of these qualities I mentioned, taking part in something else that I am looking for now, contributing to it, therefore showing a new side of silver as well to consider.
If I had to say something on my mind about Hamakaze, I would say 'youth' which is interesting, because if I had to make a character that displays youth, hers isn't what one comes to my mind at all, and it very much contrasts the qualities that I associate with silver (which is important, because comparing to Kyrie, we can clearly deduct without the silver hair, her character goes down the drain)
So the question remains, what is the quality I like in her so much, that also needs silver? (both hamakaze and kyrie mashlight sports a healthy rack which I like a lot, but since they both have it, it can be ignored, personality also being the same thus uninteresting in our comparison)
So this is just one of the cases where I feel like I need more art to grasp a better understanding of my own taste and the qualities examined as well.
For the sake of the picture: I don't really like 2B, which shows silver short hair isn't enough itself for me to like a character, so the silver hair in Hamakaze is just taking part in something bigger
